Here is an Italian hand constructed 18K gold ring set with a big checkerboard cut black onyx. The onyx measures 25.6 mm across by 21.9 mm and is 8.5 mm thick. It is held by 6 prongs. The general construction is quite traditional but what sets it apart is the big checkerboard cut onyx, set instead of a faceted transparent gem which would magnify the reflections of the pavilion cuts of another gem. The shank is 3.9 mm wide at the bottom and the ring size is 7.5. The ring weighs 21.6 grams of which we believe the onyx weighs about 5 grams or 30 carats. The ring is stamped with 750 for 18K gold and also has a hallmark of it’s Italian maker ( 38-RY or PY) hard to make out clearly.
