Please read the content below written by a Australian opal dealer:
“Lightning Ridge Black opal is one of the rarest gemstones on earth and many opal miners will be lucky if they find a red on black opal in their lifetime. Red coloured opal with a harlequin pattern is the rarest of the rare in the opal world.
Opal is Australia’s national gemstone and known all over the world as the best opal you can own. Local tribes people, the aborigines called this stone as the Fire of The Desert as it represents our desert interior. Black opals are rare, far more rare than diamonds and so many incredible colours that no other gemstone can match the brilliance of colour, fire and pattern of Australian black opals.
Lightning Ridge Black opal has been described as a full rainbow of colours that has magnified in splendid colour.
Opal miners have hard conditions to mine as the desert is extremely hot in summer and freezing cold at night in winter. As the ground is moist the miners cannot live underground because its not good for your health. This is due to artesian basin which is a massive water catchment a mile or so underground. This water is helpful when opal miners need to wash their opal bearing dirt.
To own a black gem opal has to be high on everyone’s want list in life but in reality very few people get to own a gem black opal as they are just so rare.Black opals are one of those items you buy in life and can pass down generation to generation like our local aborigines. They believe we are custodian of the land and its content so we are custodian of these opals.
Legend has it that the creator came down to earth and where his foot stepped created the fire opal and even today many people enjoy the mystical aspects of our national gemstone The Black opal.”
