Fabulous Vintage 1960s 18K Gold Lion Brooch

What a magnificent brooch!!! As soon as I saw it I had to buy it for my shop here on Ruby Lane. This image of a lion is whimsical, very stylized and is a work of a true artist. As a goldsmith who has done quite a bit of work with gold, I am amazed at the work involved here to achieve this visual effect. The face of this lion has a nose made of 18K white gold and is pave set with 11 brilliant cut diamonds. The eyes are set with a pear shape emerald, measuring 6.7 mm by 3.80 mm on your left and 3 small diamonds set in white gold on your right side. The tongue is shown as red ruby and the whiskers are white gold or platinum. The ears are also made in white gold and set with small diamonds. Above the head there is one 3.9 mm diamond and one 4.1 mm sapphire. The brooch is about 2.3 inches wide and 1.6 inches high. It weighs 26.5 grams! On the back you find a stamp 750 in a trapezoid shaped frame which attests to Italian maker… Left of it a small letter t. The pin closure is made in white gold and has a locking mechanism at the hinge and at the opposite side. This type of closure was also typical of French made brooches. I have looked extensively on the Internet to find who the maker of this fabulous brooch was. In the process I have seen many brooches of cats and lions made by Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and a few other high quality makers and I have not seen one as artistically designed and made as this one.
